Chapter 8

Asher went back to the rest of the files on the desktop just as Tristan and Joel returned from the screening room.

“Putting my assistant to work, I see,” Tristan said to Joel. “Note the emphasis on the my part.”

“I know, I know, but he’s had experience in this type of stuff before. It’s a really big help.”

“I don’t mind,” Asher said. “I found a bunch of files for you, Joel.”

“How many?”

“Uh...” Asher clicked on the folder. “Thirty-two scenes.”

“See that? I’ve improved my editorial output by thirty-two percent.”

“Asher has, you mean. What is he making you do, Ash?”

Asher smiled at Tristan’s use of that nickname. He hadn’t heard it in a really long time, probably since he’d last been home to visit his parents. It was flattering, although he made sure Tristan didn’t notice how pleased he was. He didn’t want to embarrass him.

“I had to find scenes featuring leather for the compilation DVD.”

“Leather? Jesus, Joel, you’ll scare him off! And I’m starting to like him,” Tristan said.

“Starting to?” Asher said expectantly, looking up at his boss.

“Okay, fine, you’re good at what you do and I genuinely enjoy your company.” Tristan sighed dramatically, making Asher grin. “There, look, now he’s getting full of himself. Next he’ll be asking for a raise.”

“I had him go through the back catalog,” Joel explained. “You weren’t too scandalized by the findings, were you, Asher?”

“Not...really. Like you said, I’m starting to get used to it.”

“Why did that sound like a pause in your voice then?” Tristan asked.

Asher thought he heard an edge of seriousness in Tristan’s tone, but from the look on his face Asher could tell he was being glib.

“There was one moment with two guys dressed in leather and this swing—”

“Good thing I didn’t show him the kink collection,” Joel said.

Asher frowned, and both men laughed at him.

“He’s being serious, Ash,” Tristan said, chuckling. “Your eyes are not quite ready, my young apprentice.”

“Who you calling young?”

“I have at least ten years on you!” Tristan answered back. “Wait, how old are you again?”

“Twenty-eight.”

“Christ, then I have fourteen years on you.”

“It doesn’t look like it,” Asher said.

“He really is looking for a raise, isn’t he?” Joel said.

“No, he’s just honest, which is one of the reasons why I hired him,” Tristan said, putting his hand on Asher’s shoulder.

“And because you said I was easy on the eyes,” Asher joked.

Tristan did a double-take, and Joel burst out laughing.

“Oh my God, that is so Tristan,” Joel said, wiping his eyes.

“It is not!”

“At least this time you actually found someone competent. Remember that kid, what’s-his-name, Barry?”

“Benny,” Tristan said, rolling his eyes.

“Benny! Gym rat dude. Couldn’t put two words together to save his life.”

“That was years ago,” Tristan groaned.

“Didn’t you fire him?”

“He was doing things he shouldn’t have been doing.”

“Like what,” Joel laughed, “adding two scoops of protein powder in his shakes?”

“Long story.”

“I’m easy on the eyes too, y’know. Isn’t that why you hired me, Tristan?” Joel made a show of batting his eyelashes, and nudged Asher with his elbow.
